How to Stop Snacking at Night

Can’t Quit Late-Night Snacking?

Who doesn’t love having a midnight snack? Well, it turns out our bodies don’t really love it. Since we eat to fuel our body and when we sleep we require less fuel, late-night snacking can cause all sorts of digestion problems. Eating right before going to bed is a habit that you really need to break. Knowing how to stop snacking at night is critical, especially if you’re trying to lose weight.

It takes at least two weeks to create a habit. So if you do these things consistently for the next two weeks or more, then you should have no trouble curbing those late-night cravings down the road.

7 Helpful Hints on How to Stop Snacking at Night

1) Eat Regularly – Eat at regular intervals throughout the day. Finish your day with a satisfying dinner. This keeps your blood sugar at a steady level throughout the day and by the time you get ready for bed you won’t feel that need for a late-night snack.

2) Maintain a Healthy Diet – Fill your cravings with healthy options during the day. Denying yourself throughout the day the things that you crave will lead to late-night eating. Instead, have a small sliver of cake after dinner. Or satisfy your sweet tooth with a healthier option like sherbet, Jello or pudding, mixed fruit, or a low-fat ice cream bar.

3) Count to Ten – Put off your late-night temptations by 10 minutes. Tell yourself that you will not give in to temptation. If you can hold yourself off for 10 or 15 minutes, then you’re less likely to want it. You’ll get busy doing something else that you’ll forget all about that craving you had.

4) Brush your teeth – Who wants to eat right after they’ve brushed their teeth? You are telling yourself that you don’t need that snack by brushing your teeth because the day is done and it’s almost time for bed. If you eat something now you’ll just have to brush your teeth again.

5) Drink Some Water – Instead of reaching for the chips, have a drink of water. Maybe your craving has to do with dehydration, so really the last thing you need is that bowl of chips and instead a glass of water will satisfy that craving.

6) Distract Yourself – Use your other senses to take your mind in a different direction. The smell of a sweet-smelling candle just might fool your senses and satisfy that hunger.

7) Satisfy Your Taste Buds – Have a mint. There are few calories in mints or hard candy. It will freshen your mouth and give you that little burst you might be desiring.

Treat yourself to a soothing low fat drink like herbal tea or decaf coffee. Remember that decaf coffee does contain some caffeine. Herbal tea is great because many tisanes have a calming effect which can help you sleep better. So it ends up being better for you all around.

See if you can manage to resist temptation for two weeks without giving in. Before you know it, the snacking at bedtime will be a thing of the past. And then you can sleep better and watch any extra weight just melt away – all by removing late night snacking from your daily routine.
